okay, i've just run the command
chmod u-x /var/spool/mail/*
and i'll see how that goes, but if anyone else has any idea's i'm still up
for heading them.

They are mbox files, they are not directories
Procmail may think they are bogus because they have the executable bit
set.
That's all I can think of that is different. Pick one that is giving you
the BOGUS warnings and turn off the 'x'. See if that helps it.
