I'm curious - what type of system and MUA are you actually posting 
with?  I've yet to see a single post from you which isn't a one big 
paragraph blob, and the message is converted from qp to 8 bit, then from 
8bit to base64 before it ends up in at my server (according to 
headers).  It is quite probable there are linefeed translation 
issues.  Say, posting from a mac to unix?

As to echo - yes, I could use the shell, and if I went that far, I can also 
use 'bc' (which I make use of elsewhere), or even perl.  The goal here is 
to accomplish what can be accomplished within procmail itself.

I was thinking that procmail has it's own built-in echo, so that it
didn't need to invoke a shell?
