though I admit they don't cover this specific scenario. However, I
think I read somewhere that you don't really need to use lockfiles on
Maildir setups because each email for an account is stored in its own
file rather than appended to one big file. Happy to be contradicted!

Maildir was designed from the outset to not *USE* lockfiles at all, ever.
The locking, as such, is done at the atomic, file system level.
