As this thread has changed from what was asked for to alternatives, I'd like to say that your inbox threads should probably be better set to use these items (these were taken from your message) for threading

I see that Sean's email did not put in these headers so Sean's email itself would be lost from the thread if there were no subject. So maybe there should be a similar autoresponder asking for a proper In-reply-to header?

If, once the threading problem has been solved, you still need a subject header, why not use procmail to put one in, using something like "No subject from Udi(_at_)example(_dot_)com"

Using an autoresponder is a bit of an overkill to solve the possibly incorrect threading setup in your mail reader.
