Protecting more than just the envelope-from

2003-10-14 21:24:14

Has any consideration been done for allowing domain owners to protect
more than just the envelope-from?

For example, eBay might really want to authorize who can send email
with a body From: header. Since they do not post to mailing lists,
this wouldn't cause them problems. However, there would be a huge
advantage to them from not having people forge any kind of email
claiming to be from them.

Also, domain owners might want to be able to authorize who can use
their domain in an rDNS pointer. Right now, a badguy who controls
their IP address can make it look like they are coming from a
completely unrelated domain.

This goes beyond email, but since the SPF solution looks like it might
work for these cases also, maybe we should consider a more general
case. (As long as that general case doesn't cause bloat.)
