What version of perl are you using? I know earlier versions of perl 5.8
had some memory leakage using threads. And on some OS'es, a glibc issue
could drive load averages to astronomical heights, using threads. But
under normal conditions, memory usage is rather minimal.

No load problems here, but memory usage seems to be a but excessive:
