Trailing dot in domain-name

The SPF specification allows a trailing dot at the end of the domain-name:

  domain-name  = domain-part *( "." domain-part ) [ "." ]

For example:  "v=spf1 a:example.org. -all"

What is the meaning of this trailing dot? And what is the SPF software
supposed to do with it? Should it remove it?
