Actually, *all* the SPF mechanisms are simply shortcuts for exists.
SPF would work just fine if exists was the only mechanism.
Someone complained that exists queries are not cached. That is
not true, they are cached for the duration you specify, just like any
other DNS result.
That being said, the shortcuts are useful for admins who
a) don't have an easily customizable DNS server handy
or
b) can understand A,MX,PTR but have trouble understanding exists.
I am hoping to find time to implement a Python DNS server to address (a).
