| For the really annoying case where a hotel, etc. blocks almost
everything, I have set up a SMTP server that
| listens on ports 80 and 443.

Interesting, how do you make that transparent to your users?

Right now, it is only me. My user base consists only of people directly known
to me, so I can talk to them directly. This won't scale unless I (or
someone else) writes up a whole set of windows HOWTOs. I also had to do an
ssh on port 80 and 443 for the same reason. I don't travel enough to know if
there are proxies which would have blocked this, but it seems to me, without
actually looking at it, that encrypted 443 connections would be hard to
analyze.

I have only learned of hotels and such recently, was curious why my tls
failed to one of my smtp accounts, found the hotel ran a smtp proxy, and
then I moved to another port. But I know how to do that, don't think my
users would.
