Subject: [spf-discuss] thoughts on disruptive innovation as synthesis
between incumbent and startup
Meng,
I think this is out of place. You are making this into a "cult." I don't
participating in such nonsense.
for example, p2p email
is probably 12 to 24 months away.
P2P EMAIL existed since the early 80's Meng.
See FTN Fidonet Technical Networks AKA FidoNet. Still in use today. Our
product supports and integrated Internet and Fidonet Networking. See
Platinum Xpress at http://www.santronics.com The internet has been HEADING
"back" to ideas of what Fidonet has today; secured P2P communications,
handshaking, controlled DNS policies and "network" memberships, regulated
file transfers and distribution, inherent support for dupe checking, etc,
etc, etc.
Ironically, the lethal blow to FidoNet that helped stop its progress was not
only the last industry revamping call the internet but more importantly, the
conflicts between the administrators and developers on how this
"convergence" of technology should take place. Developers want to use
existing and new Fidonet Protocols to override the official old protocols
(not make it required). Administrators wanted control and mandated old
protocols for all new systems. Many young Developers went to the internet.
Many Admins became your ISPs of the internet today. It is very often that I
can't help but feel all the DEJA VU around the IETF and here. Although I
think the IETF is will not disappear, I do see a new "Modern Internet
Developer" group or consortium emerging, if the IETF continues to hold back
necessary progress. Exactly what happen to the Fidonet.
Lets stop reinventing things like they are brand new. This will hurt your
chances in seeking funds when VC will ask what is so unique about this
"technology."
This is the sort of thing that drives the engine of
disruptive technologies and brings innovations to market.
Stupid, selfish incumbents caught on the horns of the
innovator's dilemma are a necessary antithesis to the
technology startup. They are both essential ingredients of
innovation.
Another way to view this is that Chaos promotes change and opportunity,
until the next equilibrium is reached. Life has always been like this.
Meng, there is really not to much value here with SPF. I personally think
you are pinning yourself to something that really has a short life. I don't
see where you are going with this but it is foolish.
Of course, if you have a "fire in the belly" and "greedy ambitions" and I
mean that in a good way, to the extent that you want to make a business out
of it, then all power to you. I will pat you on the back and say "go west!"
But in the mean time, you are jeopardizing SPF with this "cult" mentality.
This will scare professional organizations and make then do a double take on
SPF.
Get the SPECIFICATION written. That is really all you need to concentrate
on.
Sincerely,
Hector Santos, CTO
