Just use it, and require your business partners to use some form of
authentication "so you know it really them". Don't tell them to use SPF or any
other method. Just ask them what they are using for authentication. If they
already have a method, try to add that to your arsenal. If they don't, wait
for them to ask you for suggestions, then suggest SPF (which is the simplest
for a sender to deploy, and can be used for whitelisting business email even
when the record ends with ?all).

You misunderstood my question. I don't have a personal problem with spam, nor do the people I work with. I've got it down to a few minutes a day. It's the internet-wide problem I want to help solve. My motivation at this point is mostly intellectual, some altruistic, and some need for revenge. A year ago I lost several days of email in a DDoS attack.

I read about SPF a couple of months ago, and it confirmed what I had thought should be done a year ago. I did some further reading and was astonished to find very little understanding of the new methods, even among IT folks, and progress in recent months stalled. I concluded that the problems weren't technical, but social engineering. There is not enough positive feedback in the system to overcome the inertia. Not enough immediate benefit for ISPs to take the next step.

You and I, and most technically smart people can deal with the spam problem and let the rest of the world suffer. The result will be some solution that we probably won't like - government regulation, a proprietary solution, etc. One thing that won't happen is a continuation of the present trend. Email has become important even for politicians. I can just see them mandating all the things ISPs should be doing now voluntarily.
