As IETF today sent notice about approval of SID and SPF drafts for
experimental RFC it would be good to decide on if coordinated action
by SPF Community is necessary or if people in the community who do not
agree with IETF decisions (on SID) should proceed with actions such as
appeals to IETF Chair individually.
Since period to launch appeals is limited, this discussion and
understanding on what SPF Council intends to do should be done ASAP
within next couple weeks. I therefore request that this be
discussed on the next meeting of SPF Council followed further
by discussions on this mail list by entire community.
I have a question for anyone who might know the answer: Does approval of
an "experimental" draft as an RFC still allow us to get an RR type for
adding "SPF" type records in DNS?
(I know that's not 100% related to William's question, but for me that was
most of the value I wanted to see from any filing with the IETF).
I don't fully approve of IETF's actions, but I believe that the actions of
the IETF will not really determine SPF's fate. I believe the IETF moves
slowly enough that SPF stands a reasonable chance of becoming a de-facto
standard before it is a de-jure standard. For that reason, I believe it is
important that we manage our relationship with the IETF and pay attention
to what they are doing, but I also believe that it's not the most important
thing we can be doing. I would respectfully ask the council for a position
and a suggestion for action if deemed appropriate, and then to move on to
other matters.
