Hello, can You please tell me, when SPF is leaving the state of
experimental?
"Experimental" is only a tag that the IETF chose to attach to SPF. From
the perspective of the SPF community and many SPF users, SPF has been
stable for at least two years and rock-solid since the SPFv1 RFC (4408)
was published in April 2006.
However, SPF certainly has its little problems (some might say, big
problems, although most of them just don't like the concept of SPF), and
they cannot be removed without breaking compatibility with existing
"v=spf1" records -- something that we have always been trying very hard to
avoid.
I think it can be safely said that we now understand SPF, and the effects
it has on the e-mail system, very well and are now aware of most of its
problems. We are currently debating the possibilities of creating another
version of SPF (v1.1 and/or v3) that resolves most of the problems and
perhaps adds a few important features. If we decide to take this route,
it will certainly take at least another year before a new specification
can be released.
I suggest you subscribe to the SPF project's announcement list[1] where we
send important news roughly twice or so a year. That will keep you up to
date.
Julian.
