FOP has nothing to do with any particular xslt technics like grouping
actually. All transformation stuff happens before FOP on its own gets control.
The fact that FOP accepts xml+xsl as input only means that FOP itself runs
tranformation for you pleasure, but that's quite distinct stages, as David
pointed out.
And take a look at FOP's faq[1] as OutOfMemory is faq indeed.
