Retrieving Position-Nr of Element

Hello you all!

I have selected one special element A with a certain id. When I create of 
node-set with A being in it, is there a way of efficiently get the position() 
of A in that node-set without traversing the node-set sequentally??

Any help will be appreciated ;-)
