You could just use the immediately preceding day element:
<xsl:variable name="previous" select="preceding::day[1]" />
<xsl:if test="$previous">
<a title="View the previous journal entry"
href="?{$previous/@date}.{$previous/../@date}.{$previous/../../@date}">
<xsl:text>Previous</xsl:text>
</a>
</xsl:if>
and similarly for the following day element.
I wasn't aware it would work like that.
