Well, my processor (msxml3) translates <xsl:text>&#xa0;</xsl:text> into a
regular space, which means that the browser will gladly use that space for
breaking long lines. Exactly what I don't want.

I won't believe this unless you post a reproducable example.

<xsl:text disable-output-escaping="yes">&amp;nbsp;</xsl:text> works though

Not portable.
