Chalk it up to Microsoft (MSXML 3.0/XMLSpy) as
well as whatever version of MSXML is built into
Office 2003 (I believe it's a beta of 5.0?).

Then the XSLT processor you are using has a very
strange bug.
I can see
it rejecting the whitespace, I can see it
ignoring it, but I can't see
it producing different output as a result of it!
