sibling is (since a Boolean false or true becomes the number 0 or 1 when

And now I'm thinking that to work around the type-conversion rules you may
have to do
substring(" _",1 + boolean(preceding-sibling::*[1][self::nospace]), 1)
since otherwise your node-set will be turned into a string before it's made
a Boolean and then a number.... :->
