Unless I'm missing something, it's exactly what you are 
describing below. What are you using to do the trasform? Xalan?

Actually I was using saxon

You probably are using msxml that has the nasty habbit of stripping
spaces from the xml source. 
Add xml:space="preserve" to your <text> element
