Me again, but only with a persnickety warning. It might have been some 
piece of software that did it, but

entity references, whereas
<xsl:template match="node2">
  <xsl:text disable-output-escaping="yes">&amp;</xsl:text>
  <xsl:value-of select="@attr/>;
</xsl:template>

will work.
