Subject: Re: [xsl] Value at position()

Despite the fact that the subject line contains "position()" you do not
want the position() function, the value returned by position() has _no
relation_ to the location of the element in the source tree. It relates
to the position of the node in the current node list, which is
determined by the currently active select=...

For example any element selected by parent::* will have position() of 1.
The same element selected by a different Xpath will usually have a
different position().

A is found at element 4.

If you really need that (which is unlikely) then you want to know the
number which is one more than teh number of earlier siblings of that
element, which is:

<xsl:value-of select="count(*[.='A']/preceding:-sibling::*) + 1"/>

However if you just want to select the element with value A you do not
need this number, you just need select="*[.='A']"
