oh, there's always a solution:-)
for example in your "first pass" node set you could store the sums rather
than the links (just using the "one file" form of document() ) so
something like
<xsl:variable name="ME-sum">
<xsl:for-each select="ME>
<sum>
<xsl:value-of
select="count(document(concat('../',@xid,'.xml'))/some/path/i/forget"/>
</sum>
</xsl:variable>
so now $ME-sum is something like
<sum>5</sum><sum>7</sum><sum>3</sum><sum>3</sum>
including repeated sums, so you just want to sum that:
<xsl:value-of select="msxsl:node-set($ME-sum)/sum"/>
