select="exsl:node-set($rtf)/someelement">

  <!-- using key() here to operate on the document

</xsl:for-each>
...
</xsl:for-each>



XSLT2 will make this much nicer as then you can get
rid of exsl:node set and
the for-each and go

<xsl:variable name="original" select="/"/>
<xsl:for-each select="$rtf/someelement">

  <xsl:value-of select="$original/key(....)"/>
</xsl:for-each>
