Oh well. I have got a java solution in place to cover my issue. Its not
pretty but it works.

Thanks for showing me this though. I am sure it will come in handy on other
projects.

yes, I'm surprised you didn't get a syntax error much earlier than this.
As I mentioned, that was an XSLT2 solution.
XSLT2 is still in draft and xalan doesn't implement it.
