RE: text() handling

One might need to preserve space for output formating but trim space for
testing conditions. Also, I wonder does normalize-space preserve a
single space? For example,

<anode>   foo   bar   </anode>

What would normalize-space do to the above node?
'foo bar', ' foo bar ', 'foo   bar'.

why would you use an extension function rather than just
normalize-space() which probably does more or less the same thing in
these cases?
