Also, if I'm not mistaken the original colors problem could be solved very neatly in XSLT 1.0 using keys....

But if that's not the real problem it doesn't much matter.

So please consider posting your real problem in detail, including xml data, rather than just parts of any xsl you developed. Many respondents may prefer having data to manipulate rather than flying blind or inventing some of their own.
