Re: most efficient way to check for a group of tags?

Except that "count(tag1|tag2|...)" doesn't work (from
experience).

It will work so long as the elements with names tag1 etc are children of
the content element (which was also a requirement for the version in
your original post) actually in both cases you don't need to count() as
you don't need to know how many there are , just f there is more than
one of them so you can use (.....)[2] as if there is a 2nd, there is
more than one.
