Or if you are really set on using multiple templates, you can get in by
the back door: they've let in top level keys in patterns....
<xsl:key name="x" match="/" use="if (1=2) then 'a' else 'b'"/>
<xsl:template match="key('x','a')"> AAAxxx</xsl:template>
<xsl:template match="key('x','b')"> BBBxxx</xsl:template>
I wonder if it's too late to put in a LC comment asking for \[...] in
patterns... probably ...
