yes. in XPath 1 / (like .) are defined (probably by mistake:-)
as _complete steps_ so you can't have /[] or .[].
This is true both in Xpath expressions and in xslt match patterns.
<xsl:template match="/[$testing]">
is doubly wrong as you can't have variables in xslt1 patterns either.
xslt2 is your friend:-)
