I'm not quite sure what you are trying to get out the other end of your
transformation but try using the code below as the pi.xsl and build from
there.

encoding="iso-8859-1"/>
<xsl:template match="/">
<xsl:for-each select="customers/customer">

<xsl:value-of select="address"/>
<br/>
<xsl:value-of select="phone"/>
<hr/>
</xsl:for-each>
</xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>
XSLT can be VERY unforgiving.
