but this one is so strange. 
the normal <xsl:processing-instruction> tag refuses to work wherever i try 
to code...

there is an xsl:processing-instruction element in XSLT, but your code
has
<xsl:pi 

which is a syntax error as XSLT doesn't have an element of that name.
