The real question is, are there good, reliable tools for XSL-FO output to PDF?

Yes, there are quite a lot. See http://www.xslfo.info

He did ask for *good* tools (apache FOP is not a good tool, BTW).

You may be right; but you have given no reasons for your assessment, so
it's impossible to even judge what you might mean.

I have some experience with publishing companies (more than most, I would bet) and they do not use tools to convert XML to PDF.

So how *do* these publishing companies set about the task of converting
from XML to PDF? Do they do it by hand???

If they are going to output to PDF they go straight to PDF and the
/real/ source is long gone or in some proprietary binary format
(probably most likely) when the document lives.

The poster that you quoted asked about tools for outputting PDF from
XSL:FO. You seem to be recounting some unrelated anecdote.

The real question is why use PDF. It sucks. MS Word or OO Write is better (not best).

For what??? PDF is superior to MS Word on Unix platforms, for example,
because it works. In what sense do you consider PDF to "suck"?

What value do these judgements of yours have if you can't be bothered to
provide any context that would enable people to evaluate them?
