I spent a lot of time trying different things to get
item-at() to work. It seems to be still present in the xquery
spec
No, XSLT 2.0 and XQuery 1.0 both refer to the function library defined in
the functions and operators specification at
http://www.w3.org/TR/xpath-functions/, and the item-at() function was
removed from this library a long time ago.
