Do as you like.  The OpenOffice documents are also zip archives, and
can be edited, by hand, in sections e.g. content.xml, meta.xml etc.

That's very interesting. If I were using ODF to create the master
documents that would indeed be useful. But at the moment I'm using
vim
to write my master document and processing it with xsltproc.
