Same here, I've gone down the same path as you, not knowing what went on
"under the hood" and getting unimaginable results. Once your grasp the
idea about template matching, you'll be amazed how much power it holds
and you won't look back to your old methods ever again ;)
I really feel I've learned a very valuable lesson here.

Consider reading Jeni Tennison's "Introduction to XSLT 2.0", she is very
good at making the xslt concepts understandable to a large audience.
