I'm using Saxon 6.5.5,

it would be easier in saxon 8....

don't you want 20 (31-12+1)  ?


Something like

<xsl:template match="bit_postion>">
<td>
<xsl:if test="contains(.,':')">
<xsl:attribute name="colspan">
<xsl:value-of select="1 + substring-before(.,':') - substring-after(.,':')"/>
</xsl:attribute>
</xsl:if>
...
</td>
</xsl:template>
