What would you've done?
well.... I don't need to guess what I would have done, as I can say what
i did do, which was add the line about "easier in xslt 2" as a basic
principle for this general category of problem, before looking at the
coding details, then coded a solution in xslt 1 (which was what was
asked for) which is in this case, probably the same as I'd do in xslt 2...
the only thing easier in 2 would be that you could go
<xsl:attribute name="colspan"
select="1 + substring-before(.,':') - substring-after(.,':')"/>
instead of
<xsl:attribute name="colspan">
<xsl:value-of select="1 + substring-before(.,':') - substring-after(.,':')"/>
</xsl:attribute>
which isn't really easier at all, just shorter:-)
