Thanks for the guidance. I will certainly have a look at your 
books. If firefox is not a good testing environment, what 
would you recommed?

Ideal would be Stylus Studio or oXygen, or failing that, just use the
command line. If you have to run it in the browser eventually then you need
to develop using an XSLT 1.0 processor (which will be much harder work) so
that's an early decision you have to make.

Also, what have you seen with regards to XSL to X3D, are you 
aware of any projects that have used this technique?

No, I don't have any experience of X3D.
