Procmail is messing up the "From popserver" line of random emails so
that they are appended to mbox as ">From popserver" which results in
all kinds of trouble.
Here is the relivent parts of the procmail log:
procmail: Executing "/usr/bin/formail,-I,From ,-a,From "
procmail: Match on "Subject:.*\[SDG\]"
procmail: Locking "/home/faux/.mail/mbox.lock"
procmail: Assigning "LASTFOLDER=/home/faux/.mail/mbox"
procmail: Opening "/home/faux/.mail/mbox"
procmail: Acquiring kernel-lock
procmail: [16522] Thu May 1 11:30:04 2003
procmail: Unlocking "/home/faux/.mail/mbox.lock"

The problem has happend on other rules as well but this is the one I
pulled the example from.
Here is the resulting mangle:
>From popserver Fri May 1 18:40:02 GMT 2003
Here are the rules for the above actions:
:0 fhw
| ${FORMAIL} -I "From " -a "From "
# sdgoth mail
:0:
* Subject:.*\[SDG\]
${DEFAULT}
Some research[0] indicated that permisssions might be an issue so
here are the permissions on the various files:
drwx------ 3 faux users 2488 May 1 12:42 /home/faux/.mail
-rw------- 1 faux mail 0 May 1 11:58 /var/spool/mail/faux
drwxrwxr-x 2 root mail 96 May 1 11:58 /var/spool/mail
drwx------ 2 root mail 35280 May 1 12:42 /var/spool/mqueue
[0] do you know how hard it is to STFW for anything involveing the
word 'from'?
