I'm running RH7.3 havent upgraded fetchmail,

Sadly we don't all run RH 7.3 :-) What does "fetchmail -V | head" tell you?

It tells me....

This is fetchmail release 5.9.0+IMAP-GSS+SSL+INET6+NLS
Linux slagville 2.4.18-3 #1 Thu Apr 18 07:37:53 EDT 2002 i686 unknown
fetchmail: couldn't find canonical DNS name of head
Taking options from command line and /home/slag/.fetchmailrc
Poll interval is 120 seconds
Idfile is /home/slag/.fetchids
Fetchmail will forward misaddressed multidrop messages to slag.

i'll forward my muttrc file when i get home from
work.

.fetchmailrc surely?

Yes.

# Configuration created Fri May 17 20:01:21 2002 by fetchmailconf
set postmaster "slag"
set bouncemail
set no spambounce
set properties ""
set daemon 120
poll mail.attbi.com with proto POP3
user 'rfindlay10' there with password '#######' is 'rfindlay10' here

But yes, i'm trying to avoid having my inbox get
flooded.

Surely in that case you want the old emails deleted? Just make sure you
don't have "fetchall" set.

I want to maintain all the emails i get on my pop3 server. I re-read
many of mails a day or so later at work via my ISP webmail.

I just want fetchmail to grab the new mails only leaving the read ones
on the server. Not flooding my inbox spool with duplicate messages.

Can this be done? As it is, i just kill fetchmail before I go to
work so i can read new mail as it arrives on the server whilst at
work.

Please don't CC me on anything sent to mailing lists or send
me email directly unless it's a privacy issue, thanks.

It's true that every time you hear a bell, an
angel gets its wings. But what they don't
tell you is that every time you hear a
mouse trap snap, an Angel gets set on fire.
