I note that the faired query uses POP3 but the successful one uses IMAP.
What happens when you use IMAP under 6.1.2?
Actually, because I haven't set a preference of transport protocal,
fetchmail tries IMAP, fails, then tries POP3 and fails again. So neither
work on this server. However, if it helps you, here is the listing from
fetchmail -v -v using fetchmail 6.1.2 (it still fails):
