[Belatedly answering my own question]
For anyone interested, using gmake instead of make fixed the compilation
problem.

generates the following warning [not sure if related to the make problem
below]:

On trying to build I get the following:
% make
...

Stop in /usr/local/src/fetchmail-6.2.3.
