Is there a way to keep fetched messages marked as unread on
the original server?
Not reliably. The default approach for fetchmail *may* leave messages
marked unread on *some* POP servers.
Actually, I think you'll find it doesn't.
The way to leave the message as unseen is to retrieve it using "TOP".
Fetchmail will use "TOP" only if you have not specified "keep" or
"fetchall".
If you have specified "keep" to leave mail on the server, then it will use
"RETR" and will be marked as seen.
Of course, if you're talking IMAP then you need to remember that with
IMAP it's the client that keeps track of what has been read, not the
server...
There is a \Seen mesasage flag in IMAP, which is implicitly set if you use
FETCH BODY (but not if you use FETCH BODY.PEEK)
