Excerpts from ext.ietf-822: 16-Sep-91 POINT OF ORDER Greg

Content-types:

(I presume the straw-man referred to is your message
<9109111024(_dot_)aa09135(_at_)NRI(_dot_)NRI(_dot_)Reston(_dot_)VA(_dot_)US>.)

1) Can sub-types be registered under more than one content-type. i.e.
can PostScript be both a image and text-plus?

Yes. In fact, I'd rather see "Content-type" defined in terms of "type"
and "format" (rather than "type" and "sub-type") where the "type" field
indicates some kind of format-independent "viewing resources class" of
the message body, and "format" indicates the exact format of the message
body.

2) Are the strawman definitions of the types clear? Please send
clarifications of radical disagreements. I already have heard
discontent about the use of application for "program input" rather
than for query-response or Knowbot type mail.

Mostly, with the exceptions I've cited in
<ccnHsaUB0KGWMas1Fs(_at_)holmes(_dot_)parc(_dot_)xerox(_dot_)com>.
