I suspect that mnemonic would be less well accepted than romanization.
However, very few people use romanization any more.

At least for Japanese I don't think this is true.  I continue to see
romanized Japanese email messages and they still teach
Japanese kids how to read and write romanized Japanese.  Of course
they would perfer something that represented their language
better -- but 7 bit characters will be with us for a while longer.
