X.400 and MIME

1992-08-15 18:35:12

Just like to let you gentlemen know that I have no major negative view on the
MIME specification, although I did not like the message segamentation idea.
We have taken look at the implementation. In my next major MH release, MIME
will be supported.

During the past, several (more than 20) people sent me SMTP/822 based
internet messages asking for "more information" about X.400. In my reply
to them, I have to tell them the truth of "Like you, I am still using SMTP
to send my messages. I am not an expert on X.400".

I am glad to see some MIME contributors voice their opinions on the commercial
magazines such as CommunicationsWeek. Many directors on many campuses (more
than 100, if you do not trust me, feel free to do a survey) feel that "X.400"
is more familiar to them than SMTP, "because I just saw the name of
"X.400/500" on a magazine not a while ago", although they are using SMTP
to send messages everyday.

Let me make my point clear: One one hand, SMTP was and still is a successful
protocol because so many people are using it; one the other hand, SMTP fails
on "selling" itself--many people are using it, but they do not know what it
is (I understand that all the scientists know what it is). I wish MIME would
be better "advertised".
