Re: MIME to Draft Standard

7) Message Integrity Check needed in MIME

Proposed Solution: Add a new optional content header for a MIC based on
MD5.

If we're going to add something like this, I would like to suggest
that we also somehow "add" a spec for compression (maybe in a separate
doc?).

I received an audio/basic message once (got to hear Marshall's voice
for the first time! :-), but I was just disgusted about the size
required for the trivial amount of sound (short recording).

Instead of "releasing" specs like audio/basic to the Internet without
an accompanied spec for compression, which could well lead to
"explosions", we should sit down and give compression some thought.

Yes, yes, there's the issue of: "WHICH compression scheme do we use?
Are there any patent restrictions?" and so on, but PLEASE, someone
more knowledgeable in the compression field than myself, please come
up with a hopefully SIMPLE proposal, unfettered by patent issues, and
probably ignoring the fact that certain types of compression are
better for certain types of data (i.e. the differences between image
compression, audio compression, video compression, and what have you).

PLEASE. Pretty please?

Regards,
Erik

PS If someone already DID make a compression proposal for MIME,
then I must have missed it, in which case I apologize!
