I believe that the system that you describe for yourself works
quite well, but does not work so well while you are at the grocery
store, gas station, visiting a relative, or otherwise 'untethered'.

For such situations, there is an installed base of small, portable
devices, called pagers.  Allen (and others) is concerened with 
facilitating access to that broadcast system, using Internet
mechanisms for input.
