On the other hand, there is a need for digital signatures and
encryption of non-EDI bodyparts as well.  Therefor, it would be
redundant to develop separate mechanisms for these purposes for
the EDI bodypart.

Is it possible to converge the X12/EDIFACT stuff with the output
of the PEM crew, so we only have to do this *ONCE* and cover
everybody?  Alternatively, if the PEM scheme provides sufficient
functionality, should there be a switch variable someplace that
allows the option of using the PEM or EDIFACT scheme?
